We are a competitive Ultimate team, representing Rutgers University. If you are thinking about joining our team, please click the sign-up link at the top of the page.
We are interested in recruiting new players this year. Whether you are an All-American Varsity athlete looking for a spot on our A-team, or someone who has never played a sport before looking to learn about ultimate while playing with the B-team, or somewhere in between, there is a spot for you. Ultimate is a great way to keep in shape (or get into shape) and have fun.
No previous experience with the sport of ultimate is required; we will teach you how to throw, catch, and run our offensive and defensive systems.
We will usually go to 3-4 tournaments in the fall (including one that we host here, on Busch campus) where giving everyone playing time is emphasized.
The spring season is more competitive, with tournaments leading up to the college series (sectionals, regionals, and nationals). We generally go to 5-7 tournaments in the spring; including going to Savannah, Georgia during spring break to play ultimate, and have a great time. This year there are even plans in the works to fly out to Las Vegas for 3-4 days in February to play in one of the biggest college tournaments in existence! As you can see, traveling is one of the many benefits of playing on the team.
Rutgers has had a history of being coached by players on the club team Pike. Pike is in the top-tier of ultimate teams in the country, frequently qualifying for nationals, and placing as high as 3rd in 2004. For 3 years (2004-2006), Geoff Buhl was our coach. Having qualified for nationals with college teams and with Pike, Geoff truly had a great understanding of the game. During those 3 years, he laid the groundwork for the strategy and tactics that we use at Rutgers. (His strategies were seen as so successful that they were adopted by premiere high school teams, college teams, and even Pike.) After Geoff left for California in 2006, Rutgers graduate and current Pike member Emilio Panasci (aka Mio) stepped in as coach for 2007. This year, Mio looks to return as coach with the additional help of another Rutgers graduate and current Pike member Ellis Kim.
Rutgers has been a relatively successful team over the past few years. Geoffs coaching has taken Rutgers from a struggling team to one that won the Metro New York section two years in a row and placed 5th in the Metro East region two years in a row. Last year was a rebuilding year for Rutgers. We placed third in our section, losing in the game to go to regionals. Despite this loss, Rutgers has come off of the best recruiting year in recent history, and is laying the foundation for a program that will see increased success with every year.
